And here, a few weeks ago, was a condo that sold for $750,000 — a record-setting price for a home at the time in this heated market.
When a contingent of Boston investors bought the two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom space in July for $1.15 million, they were simply hoping for an attractive place to live.
But as the time since their purchase nears three months, they say they are living in what they call a grand old house — and not just any house, but one once owned by James Brown.
“We should be on ‘Dr. Phil’ instead of listing a condo,” said one investor, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the sale.
The price is so eye-popping in part because Brown, the late singer and star of the “Soul Train” television program, once owned the place, which was designed by the famed architect Robert Venturi.
Brown died in 2006 and left the property to his children. It was listed at $6.5 million in early 2008.
The new owners say they have started to enjoy the house and are already planning a trip to Ireland. “It’s really something to live in,” said one, who said he was more enamored with the fact that the property had a large dining room than the spacious loftlike living area.
“We felt it was the house, but we just didn’t know how to put it on the market,” he said.
“We actually thought the home would sell for more than $750,000,” said another investor who also was not authorized to speak about the sale.
They also were not sure how to list the house on the Multiple Listing Service.
